Terms of Use

Last updated: May 2026

These Terms of Use govern your use of the Back to Safety app, developed by Audrey de Jong, Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist at GGZ IJssel-Berkel. By using the app, you agree to these terms. Please read them carefully before using Back to Safety.

1. Purpose of the App

Back to Safety is provided for informational and self-help purposes only. The app offers nervous system regulation exercises based on published scientific research, intended to support general wellbeing and stress reduction. The content in this app is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition or mental health disorder.

2. Not a Substitute for Professional Care

Back to Safety is not a substitute for professional mental health care, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The exercises and information in this app are not equivalent to therapy or clinical care. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, severe symptoms, or have concerns about your mental or physical health, please contact a qualified healthcare professional, your general practitioner, or an emergency service immediately. If you are in crisis, please contact emergency services or a crisis helpline: - United States: 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) - United Kingdom: 116 123 (Samaritans) - European Union: 116 123 (general emotional support) - International directory: findahelpline.com - Or contact your local emergency services

3. User Responsibility

You are responsible for your own wellbeing and for determining whether the exercises in this app are appropriate for you. Some exercises, such as breathwork or body-focused techniques, may not be suitable for everyone. If you feel unwell, distressed, or experience any adverse effects during or after an exercise, stop immediately and seek appropriate support.

4. Scientific Basis

The exercises in Back to Safety are based on established, peer-reviewed scientific research and clinical frameworks, including Heart Rate Variability (HRV) training, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Somatic Experiencing, and Polyvagal Theory. The content has been selected and structured by a qualified clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. Where the underlying neurobiological mechanism of an exercise is still under investigation, the descriptions in this app use careful language such as associated with, may support, or is thought to engage. Some techniques are grounded in clinical theoretical models (for example the Compassion-Focused Therapy soothing system) rather than fully established neural structures, and this is reflected in how they are described.

5. No Warranties

The app is provided on an as-is and as-available basis. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, GGZ IJssel-Berkel and Audrey de Jong make no warranties, express or implied, regarding the app, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the app will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that any defects will be corrected.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Audrey de Jong and GGZ IJssel-Berkel shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the app or its content.

7. Intellectual Property

All content in Back to Safety, including text, audio, exercises, and design, is the intellectual property of Audrey de Jong and GGZ IJssel-Berkel unless otherwise stated. You may not reproduce, distribute, or commercially exploit any content from the app without prior written permission.

8. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms of Use from time to time. Updated terms will be published within the app. Continued use of the app after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.

9. Governing Law

These Terms of Use are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Netherlands, where GGZ IJssel-Berkel is established. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the app shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts in the Netherlands.
